His true identity is Miguel O'Hara, an Irish-Mexican geneticist in New York City in the year 2099, whose DNA is rewritten with that of a spider after an accident, gaining powers very similar to the 21st-century hero.

The creature belongs to a race of amorphous extraterrestrial parasites known as the Symbiotes and is considered the symbiotic brother of Venom.
