"Thunderbolt" Ross and the U.S. Army to develop the first gamma bomb. During his first live test, he received a massive bombardment of gamma rays while saving Rick Jones. He immediately mutated into a green giant, the living personification of rage, fueled by sheer physical strength and would come to be known as The Incredible Hulk. Fearing the damage his alter-ego could inflict, he decided to flee from the military and went on the run.
