Commissioner James Gordon and Batman formed an alliance to end crime in Gotham City. This alliance ended tragically when a criminal known as Salvatore "The Boss" Maroni, during his trial in which Harvey Dent was acting as prosecutor, threw sulfuric acid in Dent's face, horribly disfiguring the left half of his face while leaving the other half intact. The acid also disfigured his left hand and bleached the left half of his hair. This event, coupled with post-childhood trauma, gave birth to the evil villain Two-Face.
